U.S. Copyright Registration

At Atypical Publishing, we believe in setting the record straight about copyright protection. Your work is protected from the moment you create it. However, you do need to be able to prove that this is indeed your original work.  This is accomplished by filing an application with the U.S. Copyright Office in Washington, D.C.  You do not need to hire a lawyer or “specialist” to file this application. Almost every question you can face in completing and filing your copyright application. At Atypical, we recommend that every author file an application with the U.S. Copyright Office.

Once your application is filed with the U.S. Copyright Office, you will be issued a copyright number. This formal proof from the U.S. Copyright Office is what you will need in order to seek damages from another party who uses your work without your expressed written permission.

Following publication, two copies of your book are required to be filed with the U.S. Copyright Office to complete your registration process.  The copyright registration number is not published in your book but you will receive a certificate of registration within six to 12 months following your completed registration.

In reality, many authors are reluctant to file their own copyright application; so many self-publishers offer it as a service to their author clients. Most of these Publishers on Demand charge fees in excess of $120.00. At Atypical Publishing, we don’t believe that filing your copyright application should incur an additional fee.  So at Atypical Publishing, we will file your copyright application at NO ADDITIONAL COST* to you.
