To say there's a lot of reasons to be unhappy right now is the understatement of the century.
And while you could wallow in despair, blame the economy, Wall Street, and Ex-president Bush for the sad state of affairs -- and whether or not you are happy right now -- the fact there are things YOU can do to regain control.
Believe me many people could win the lottery tomorrow, marry Miss America, look out of their 5,000 square foot mansion at their 15 Ferraris being washed and waxed by their full-time servants and still say "ugh, I'm soooo unhappy."
Meanwhile, there will always be utterly average people who:
-- May be living paycheck to paycheck
-- May be cutting back where there's nowhere to cut
-- May be even worse off than you
Who forever embrace the motto "Don't worry be Happy." Here are their secrets:
1.Take care of YOU first. One of the first lessons lifeguards are taught is to keep themselves safe at all costs. Because if they are hurt, who's going to save the victim? One of the truly "etched-in-stone" truths of life is the MORE you take care of you -- the MORE you can give to others. Physically, mentally and spiritually.
2.Default to happy. Does your blood boil when someone calls you a "dirty" word? Do you yell obscenities and stick up a certain finger if you get cut off in traffic? Do you hold grudges? Listen, you can't control how other people act, but you CAN control how you respond. Now the only decision to make is: Will your default response make you happy -- or -- unhappy?
3.Happiness is positive flow. No, this is not new-agey baloney. But rather practical, rubber meets the road "snapshots" of individual, key areas of your life. Unhappy social life? Maybe you're missing a positive flow of new, and fun friends. Unhappy with your finances? Perhaps your cash flow isn't as positive as you'd like. Unhappy with your weight? Maybe you're eating negative healthy foods. Change the flow to positive, and happiness will follow.
4.Give Thanks. Life is miserable for many of the people in this world (just google Somalia refugees or Burmese Dictatorship if you don't believe me). In comparision you probably have it VERY good. Make a list of things that make your life comfortable and bring you joy (yes, write it down) and refer to it often.
5.Realize inferiority is the mother of all profanity. Look at any outrageously happy person and you'll easily see they do NOT think poorly of themselves. And neither should you.
6.Find Pleasure in Pain. You cannot be happy by striving to avoid pain. You WILL endure discomfort, setbacks and anguish and many other physical, mental and emotional tolls while striving to achieve your IMPORTANT goals. This is inevitable. Enjoy the burn, because you KNOW it will lead to a fulfilling life for YOU.
7.Only do that which is Beautiful or Important. Regrets -- painful regrets -- come from wasting time, opportunity and energy on things that you believe are frivolous and will not lead you conquering your greatest achievements. Separate the important from the unimportant, and the beautiful from the nasty and ugly, and spend time only on the things that are meaningful to YOU.
These are the 7 secrets of the few who have won the ultimate gift in life -- enduring and authentic happiness. If you want to win in life too, I suggest you do the same.
